PROMOTION TO THE RANK OF REGENTS PROFESSOR

Jon Oatley
School of Molecular Biosciences

Throughout his extensive career, Jon Oatley has established himself as an international leader in the burgeoning fields of stem cell biology and animal genetic engineering. His research on germ cell biology and gene editing has direct applications to treating human infertility, preserving endangered species and improving livestock production. Oatley’s extensive knowledge and research, along with his ability to interact well with others, have led to him presenting his findings in a congressional hearing and at the United Nations, as well as collaborating with the FDA and National Academies of Sciences. His published works have been cited over 8,000 times and continue to influence our understanding of stem cells, genetics, and methods of research. Oatley also applies his stem cell research to animal biotechnology, focusing on the production of genetically modified livestock. These heritable modifications are transforming the livestock industry to improve sustainable food production in the face of climate change and a growing global population.

Carolyn F. Ross
School of Food Science

Carolyn Ross has made significant contributions to food science through her research program, focusing on the sensory perception of foods and their effects on eating behavior, specifically for children with Down Syndrome. Inspired by her own son with Down Syndrome, Ross has developed inclusive testing methods to better understand the eating habits of children with the condition, who often experience feeding and swallowing challenges. Her research has garnered national and international attention from health professionals and major food companies, resulting in a partnership with Gerber Baby Foods to improve food quality and nutrition. Ross also freely presents her findings to parents of children with Down Syndrome and clinicians.

In addition to Ross’ commitment to improving the lives of families affected by Down Syndrome, she is a highly respected professor in the School of Food Science. A dedicated educator, Ross maintains a high standard of teaching, employing her industry insight and innovative, hands-on methods to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful food scientists. Ross has mentored over 50 students who are now working in industry, academic, and governmental roles. Through her pioneering research and passionate teaching, Ross continues to improve the food industry, as well as the lives of those around her.
